STAY COMFORTABLE

Don’t get carried away in the heat of the moment. Drive at the pace you feel comfortable at. If you don’t want to drive as quickly as the others in your group, don’t! The main thing is to enjoy yourself – if that means driving more slowly, so be it.

GET SOME HEAT IN THOSE TYRES!

When you first exit the pit lane, the tyres on your kart will be cold. This means that they won’t grip very well and if you drive too quickly on your first few laps, you’ll probably end up spinning out. Build your speed up slowly for 4 or 5 laps to get some heat in the tyres. This will also give you time to acquaint yourself with the track layout and corners. Once the tyres reach temperature, they’ll stick to the tarmac like glue!

KEEP IT SMOOTH

One of the best pieces of advice we can give you is to drive smoothly. Try to avoid erratic movements with the steering wheel, accelerator or brake. Keep your steering nice and smooth to avoid spinning out.

BE ALERT

You need to stay alert at all times on the track. Avoid the tunnel vision that many people get when they are focusing. You need to keep an eye out for potential hazards on the track (for example, a kart stuck on the barrier around the next corner). You also need to keep a look out for any warning lights or flags, especially the Yellows and Reds. You should also be aware of drivers close behind you. Remember to watch out for other karts trying to overtake you, especially in the corners and try your best to avoid contact.

STAY RELAXED AND CALM

Being relaxed and calm is absolutely essential. Try not to get carried away in the heat of the moment! Be competitive but don’t lose control or get angry – nothing good will ever come of it! If you have just been overtaken by another racer, get yourself back on to the racing line and try to win your position back cleanly.
